You Heard It Here: The (Hollywood) Animals Have It.
It’s the first of the month which means another Hollywood story. I wondered what I could talk about this month and I decided I’d share a list of all the animals I’ve worked with over the years. (Although I use that term loosely since I didn’t necessarily work with the animals so much as share the same set with them as I worked with the actors around them.)
So, keeping in mind that this list is probably forgetting one or two or ten of the animals I’ve shared a set with, here we go:
I worked with Mike Meyers and a bear for one of the Oscar telecasts.
Countless numbers of dogs, cats, ponies and horses (this includes a zebra).
An elephant (Who also happened to be the elephant that starred in Water for Elephants.)
Orangatangs, monkeys, possums, goats, cows, snakes, iguanas, lizards, spiders and every type of bird you can imagine, including an eagle and falcon.
A tiger, although I made sure I was off the set when that bad boy got there.
A sea lion, which the trainer billed as a wet lion. I’m sorry, but I had to chuckle at that. I might not be able to outrun a lion, but I’m fairly certain that on dry land I can outrun a sea lion. (I’m may be small, but I’m fast. LOL.)
(Of course there was the time I came face to face with a black panther, but that wasn’t Hollywood related. It happened in Texas when I was very young so it doesn’t count. But I felt inclined to add it since you don’t get much more exotic when discussing animals!)
Hm… I think I might’ve covered everything. Not a bad list, right? I’m a huge animal lover – especially dogs – which might explain why I put a dog in Dangerously Close. (Roamer is a combination of my old dog, Sam, and my new dog, Zachary.)
What about you? Any history of meeting a unique animal that didn’t include the zoo?
Not sure if you’ll get two comments from me, as the first one disappeared. Still two is better than none. Right? : )
That’s an impressive number of animals to have worked with. And hey, guess what i’m reading now? Yes. : ) Dangerously Close. This is late for me but it has been a busy couple of months and DC had to just chill on the Kindle for a while. But, I’m loving it. Thanks again for your wonderful stories.
Hi Robena,
Trust me, anytime I read a script and there’s an animal involved, I know we’ve tacked on potential minutes/hours onto the day. Very rarely do you get what you need in the first take.
Yay! So glad you’re loving Dangerously Close! I can’t wait to read your series when it comes out! Thanks for stopping in!
Wet lion is funny. How fun that you’ve not only gotten to work with human celebrities, but animal celebrities, too! I was going to ask what you’re favorite animal was, but I think you answered it – dogs. I got to swim dolphins once, and that was really cool.
Hi Robin,
I’m such a chicken that I think swimming with dolphins would scare me. Although I did pet one once while he was begging for the fish food I had in my hand. We had a horse on set last week which is what made me think of the post. He was gorgeous, but he had a terrible name. Sleepy. Poor guy. Very well trained though. We have a dog who’s a regular cast member as well. Very cute… but a time suck. LOL. Hope your Worth the Risk promo is super fantastic! I loved that book!
I can’t claim the assortment you’ve got, Dee. I’m very … uh … cautious, (meaning chickensh*t), when it comes to our animal friends. There was a swimming with sharks incident, which barely counts as an encounter ’cause I swam away so quickly I put Michael Phelps to shame! But, today I pet a Great Dane puppy named Moose, and lived to tell!
Hi Sam,
Swimming with sharks!! Yikes! At least the animals I’m in contact with are trained. (Mostly! LOL.) But sharks…! Love that you left Michael Phelps in your wake. A Great Dane puppy!! How sweet! Got pics? Love those long, long legs. Sweet dogs. Thanks for coming by!
Always enjoy your Hollywood stories, Dee! I was once stalked by a mountain lion in the foothills – VERY odd experience to be prey. Scary. Otherwise I’m strictly a “view them at the zoo and in the movies” person (except for house pets).
Hi Veronica,
Oh wow!! That sounds crazy scary!! A little similar to my black panther story. I met up with him by accident. It was pure luck that he didn’t pounce on me. To this day, I don’t know why he didn’t. So glad you dropped in!
Oh, I’m so impressed with the zebra! I remember seeing an iguana on a leash by pool where my kids were taking swimming lessons, but other than that, the only big animals were in zoos (which depress me, BTW). Recently in Arizona, I found a centipede in my sink. does that count as exotic?
Hi Lynne,
Yep, the centipede counts in my book. LOL. I’ll be honest, zoos depress me as well. I don’t go and I’ve never taken my daughter. (She’s gone with friends though.) The zebra was very cool. Although he made me dizzy if I looked at him for too long. LOL. He was like a strobe light. (Clearly I have a brain/eye dysfunction!)
